I deliver pizzas as a part-time, second job. It's a pretty good way to pick up some extra cash. Ask me anything!
I personally have found that I love delivering to stoners. Every time I've done so, they pay in cash and usually give me more money than they thought they did. So a $3 tip can turn into a $13 tip really quick. Never been invited to join in, though I would pass if I ever was.
Usually unless something is obviously missing from an order like a box of wings or breadsticks, a customer won't notice a wrong order until after I've left. If they notice while I'm there, I'll offer to call the store and have someone bring the missed item, or they can take it off their total. If I've already left, they could call the store. I usually am pretty good about checking my orders before I leave the store, so I don't have this problem too often.
I've only been delivering about 3 months and only part time, so I haven't had a lot of huge orders. Probably $60 or $70 was the biggest so far.
