What makes someone a particularly GOOD floral designer? Just knowing what colors and flowers go with each other?

Asked by 777 over 11 years ago

A good designer is someone who has good work ethic to keep your jobs,(specially freelancers) attention to detail, good at following instructions from different companies (each one has their own way of doing things) so basically adapting. you have to have the eye and yes definitely know colors.  As a designer you have to know flower names! seriously I cant remember how many older designers didnt know the names of flowers and would text me a picture so I tell them the name. -_-

And most important always keep a good attitude, all times.. I specialize in weddings and events and sometimes you do 46 hours straight, with only 2 hours of sleep. Everyone is exhausted and dont want to hear a rude person.

Thank you for your question :)

Are you a florist? When someone hires you for a wedding, do you both design the bouquets AND put them together, or are you basically just a middleman (with an eye:)?

Asked by Tory over 11 years ago

We both do the designing. We deal with the client, process flowers and arranged centerpieces the same way as a florist. The difference between florist and floral designers is; florist have a front shop where they sell small bouquets for any occasion, gifts, plants and or teddy bears. When the florist does weddings or events usually they have a preset designs and just change colors while floral designers have a warehouse where they JUST deal with weddings and event clients or if they have an account with a hotel or resort. Floral designers use their imagination to come up with great designs or bring the clients idea to life.

Both the florist and floral designers are capable of doing the same designs but floral designers are specialized in making bigger installations and coming up with very detailed ideas.

Look up Preston Bailey for some inspirational designs and you will see the difference :) thank you for your question

What flowers are in vogue now that weren't on anyone's radar 10 years ago?

What do you think of fake flowers? They don't smell as nice, obviously, but you can probably create more elaborate designs, right?

Do you always put together sample bouquets for clients so they can see them, or do they choose based on pictures alone?
