I own and run an independent 7 screen theater in NY. We deal with everything and anything involving movies, movie studios, customers, food, drinks, etc.
The movie studios take 60-70 percent of each ticket sold. Theaters cost a lot to run and the only way to survive is on high priced concessions. Its similar to any sporting event or concert. They also don't want you to sneak food in because they need those concession sales to keep the place open. If too many people sneak food in, the theater will not make enough to pay their bills.
What question?
Not sure where they charge $14 for a soda but most theaters start between $4 and $7 for soda.
