I book and reserve your airline tickets! Making sure that you go to your dream vacation in Paris, France and not Cairo, Egypt (though, I'm sure Cairo is just as dreamy). Currently in an office in the Philippines and I've been here for almost 2 years. Focusing on putting the correct codes in the system to make sure everything is in the right (originating city/country, destination, time, airline, name, etc.). We also help with other travel needs like hotels, other transpo, visas and the like.
Do remember that online sites, travel agencies and direct (airlines) have different fares to give you. Some times, travel agencies are way cheaper than online sites and airlines and some times online sites are way cheaper; it really depends.
You can major on Tourism. We've trained a lot of students with Tourism majors (though most take the steward or hotel management route).
To become a good travel agent, you need to learn the, what I'd like to call, "travel talk." You'll need to know what airport, city or country (as well as what airline) your client is talking about; Memorize the IATA codes and the phonetic alphabet because you'll be putting these in one of the GDS systems. (You'll learn stuff like 126JANJFKFCO¥BA or an26JANJFKFCO; Jack-Foxtrot-Kilo-Foxtrot-Charlie-Oscar)
Travel agents earn differently depending on what they handle (individual or corporate) and could earn USD20k-30k/year; On top of that, you can get great perks. Of course, it would depend on your agency.
