Is buying optional travel insurance basically always a money-losing proposition?

Asked by Trichole. almost 12 years ago

This is a question we get asked a lot, too.

It isn't always a "money-losing proposition" if you look at it in our point of view. We travel agents, other than the flight crew, pilots and everyone else, try to seek  what's best for you, our travelers. Not only do we try to get you the best hotels, airfares, tours and the like, we also look out for your safety.

Travel insurance helps with loss of baggages, medical treatments, accidents, even missed connecting flights and other things that could happen during your travel/tour (though, we do wish that nothing happens to our travelers). It just helps to be assured that you, your companions and your things are safe.

So when we suggest that you should get the travel insurance, we're just trying to look out for you. :)

Are the sites that say they can predict whether fares will rise or fall over the coming weeks and months legit?

Asked by toomey almost 12 years ago

If you're talking about certain months or seasons, then yes.

For example, summer and winter. Almost everyone is on vacation, and most will go on trips. We call these "peak seasons." There will only be a number of seats (in a certain class) that are on sale/promo, and if you didn't get to catch one, you'll get bumped up a higher class and they'll be more expensive.

How much traveling do you do yourself, and are you able to get discounts that Joe Public could not?

Asked by Another layover... almost 12 years ago

Again, this varies for other travel agencies. If I wanted to travel to a certain place for personal reasons, our company will just take my share off the price.

There are also times where we have to travel for certain events. Those who volunteer, the company will pay (if not all) for the expenses.

I have done quite a lot of travelling, but will be doing more. :)

How much value do travel agents still provide when travelers have Kayak, Orbitz, and other sites at their disposal now?

Asked by dan79 almost 12 years ago

This is actually a great question and we get this a lot.

Though it varies for other travel agents, our office is really a one-stop shop for most travelers, more flexible for what you want included in your travel. Let's say you want to go to Hong Kong, and you want to visit Hong Kong Disneyland and tour Macau for a day without worrying about the transportation on how to get there. We can have that arranged. Don't understand Mandarin? We can have a tour guide assist you during the tours.

We also assist our travelers with more complex things like Visas. Since not all travelers can travel to other countries freely, we help them attain the right kind of Visa.

Lastly, we also provide payment options. You'd be surprise by how many people who have credit cards and refuse to use them for safety reasons. We accept cash payments, as well as credit card payments.

Do government "travel advisories" actually have an adverse effect on tourism? Like when the US government goes "alright, there's a travel advisory on Mexico", how much does that hurt Mexican tourism?

Asked by MissPink almost 12 years ago

It does hurt a country's tourism because present and future travellers now have think twice on whether or not to travel to the supposed country. Travellers who now fear for their safety and booked in advance (tickets, hotels, tours and so forth) cancel their trip.

For the "adventurous" travellers, travel advisories don't really have much effect (though we do remind them of it) but for older couple, people travelling with family, and/or wealthy travellers, the advisory sometimes encourage them to travel elsewhere.

Would you allow a loved one to travel to Mexico right now? It seems scary as hell to me.

Asked by Emilio Suez almost 12 years ago

If I know they'll be in a safe place and will be cautious, then yes. If not, no.

You have to remember that not all places are safe and to be really careful. Also do some research on the country, the culture, etc., if you're going somewhere new.

I have to find 3 tickets Athens - Toronto at the absolute cheapest price possible. Dates are flexible, November or December. Return date flexible - the price is the consideration, although the longer the stay the better. Where should I search?

Asked by sunkween over 11 years ago

You should check with your local travel agencies, and your airlines or go online (Kayak, Orbitz, etc.). Or like SwanSwanson, s/he called a travel agency of his destination directly.

•If you go to a travel agency, provide them useful information. Like, how many passengers (how many are kids, how many are adults), when's your target date for travelling, how long you plan to stay there, etc.

•Check your airline's website, sometimes they have cheaper fares. Then, call them to check or visit their place (in the malls or the like). There are airlines with different fare prices depending on where you checked them.

•When you check online sites like Kayak and Orbitz, I heard you should clear out your cookies. They keep track on the things you've searched one their site and their price would go higher.

Have you noticed that the online sites like Orbitz and Expedia typically have the lowest fares for DOMESTIC, but NOT international flights? I found it WAY cheaper to call a Brazilian travel agent directly when I flew there.

Asked by SwanSwanson almost 12 years ago

Do remember that online sites, travel agencies and direct (airlines) have different fares to give you. Some times, travel agencies are way cheaper than online sites and airlines and some times online sites are way cheaper; it really depends.

Any suggestions on how to become a travel agent? Also, how much does the typical travel agent make in a year?

Asked by Eyeoa over 11 years ago

You can major on Tourism. We've trained a lot of students with Tourism majors (though most take the steward or hotel management route).

To become a good travel agent, you need to learn the, what I'd like to call, "travel talk." You'll need to know what airport, city or country (as well as what airline) your client is talking about; Memorize the IATA codes and the phonetic alphabet because you'll be putting these in one of the GDS systems. (You'll learn stuff like 126JANJFKFCO¥BA or an26JANJFKFCO; Jack-Foxtrot-Kilo-Foxtrot-Charlie-Oscar)

Travel agents earn differently depending on what they handle (individual or corporate) and could earn USD20k-30k/year; On top of that, you can get great perks. Of course, it would depend on your agency.

I'm Tour Coordinator for the Marquette Choral Society's trip to Finland next July. We have contracted with a travel agency (ACFEA) and things are starting to take shape.

The charges for the land expenses in Finland are in euros. We will make four payments, each one being converted to euros according to the rate when each payment is made. The agency has offered to lock in the rate we will pay at any time. I have no idea if locking in makes sense or not. With all the Brexit craziness, the euro may fall so that we might gain by not locking in. On the other hand, locking in offers security that we won't pay more.

I need your advice on this. What do you suggest makes the most sense?

I paid approx. $ 6600 for a business class airline ticket to a travel agency. When I got my credit card statement, it showed that only about $5500 went to the airline, and the rest, nearly $1000, went to the travel agency!
Is that normal practice?

I am booking for a family of six at an all-inclusive resort in the Caribbean. We would like to reserve a multi-bedroom villa. Due to the way the resort pricing works, it would actually be much less expensive to book half of us into the villa, and half of us into a separate room that is part of the main hotel. My question is, is there anything wrong with booking in this way if the hotel makes this pricing scheme available? I think it is likely that all six of us would spend most of our time and sleep in the villa. Is this anything that might be against normal hotel rules that could get us into trouble?

Hi!. I am from SJU, PR but roundtrip is expensive from SJU to MAD. I noticed that there's a roundtrip from MIA-MAD(July 20th - Aug 5th) that goes direct to Madrid & backto MIA with a connect in SJU for only $500. Can I buy that and skip the connect?
