What do Nail Technicians do?

  • Discuss treatment options with clients. Sometimes clients will have a good idea of what they want when they come in for an appointment, while at other times they may be looking for guidance or advice regarding new products or beauty trends.
  • Clean, file, polish, and buff nails. Nail technicians are responsible for all aspects of the nail grooming process, which will vary by client, but typically includes some combination of soaking and cleaning hands, clipping and filing nails, removing dead or rough skin, and applying polish.
  • Clean and organize their workspace. When working with hands and feet, cleanliness is a must. Nail technicians regularly disinfect and sanitize their tools, and keep their work area free from clutter.
  • Chat, listen, and gossip:) Visiting the salon is often a personal and cathartic experience for clients. While not a formal job requirement, nail technicians should be able, when a situation presents itself, to talk with clients about issues that span the spectrum from frivolous to personal.
